The simple answer is YES!
It's true, they do actually work. You just need to find the right site.

A perfect site for this is Cashcrate. You can do surveys for anywhere from 0.25c-7.00$. It's very simple too. All you need to do is create an account, start doing surveys, refer people to make 20% of what the person they refer makes, and if that person refers a person, then they make 10% of that persons. Confusing eh? Kinda.

So, If you do need a bit of extra pocket change, Cashcrate Is worth it. The only downside is that you need to make $20 from the surveys before you can cash out.

There are people on that site that have thousands of people referred, and they make around 300-500$ a month from their referrals, now that would be cool.

So, I would just sign up and atleast give it a try. Try to make the $20 payout atleast, it wouldn't even take that long. The forum their is also really friendly.

I recommend it, it's a fantastic site.
