Speaking of shitstorms, I was a member on a message board on a popular website a couple years back that was involved in a feud with Livejournal, although I didn't take part in it, I kind of observed it

This girl had committed suicide (long story, but she really was ignorant of all the good things and people in her life, and was a dumbass), and left several clues on her LJ. Her family left it up in memory of her, and the board stumbled across it one day. About 200 people invaded her LJ and left nasty comments towards her and the family, posting pics of "tubgirl" and "goatse" (if you guys don't know what those are, DON'T look them up). The backlash was so bad that her family/friends complained to the admin of the site and demanded a public apology (there were more demands, but I don't remember all the details). The admin got fed up and there was a huge amount of bannings and sterilization of that particular forum on the site (meaning no more users could post in that forum after a certain date).

So yeah, that's just a sample of a LJ shitstorm. Like you said it is nothing but a cesspool of stupidity

Discouraging people from posting blogs is tad bit on the blunt side. As you may have noticed when you actually use the internet, there are a wide variety of people who decide to blog. Grouping everyone into an emo/narcissist caste, even on one given journaling website, reeks of a parochial mind.

Generally, blogs are as full of contention as forums. It would be surprising to find any place on the web that is quite so passive.
