Because they have the three things that appeal to most people:

1) Clear vocals that aren't off key
2) Lyrics they could relate to at at least one point in their life
3) More focus on vocals and lyrics than instrumentation

Metallica is Metal.

In their last album, Minutes to Midnight, you really can't complain about screaming/bad vocals. It was mostly instrumentation and moved away from the Nu Metal feel (though I didn't agree with it)
