People become addicted to all kinds of strange behaviors, for all kinds of reasons. Although I wouldn't doubt some do want the recognition, they have usually been trained to seek out attention in unhealthy ways. I would suggest that you talk to a real psychologist, and refer people you know with the problem to a counselor or similar specialist.

Combination of habit and relieving stress. I had a friend who used to do that shit, or maybe she still does.

There's a difference to being addicted to something, and thinking you're addicted to something.

The only withdrawal syptom you'd get from quitting cutting is not having bleeding wrists anymore.

Emo's cut because Phys. Pain is more painful than emotional pain... So physical pain overlap's the emotional pain, feeling as it's not there anymore and you slowly bleed to death . Good ridden's to bad rubbish.
