Default Hey, did karate work for you?

Hey, guys.
I am about to do karate.

I did it in the past and train my close-combat moves everyday.
Did karate - goju ruy and fushin ruy or shotokan - work for you?
If so, what is your experience?

Or if you did kung fu, wing chun or shaolin, please tell me which is the best self-defense art to do.

Any form of martial arts is good. You cant really go wrong. I myself did Tang Soo Do (Korean) for 2 years. It built my strength up, made me a LOT more flexible and in a way increased my discipline.

No.
It depends on which karate.
Tae kwon do is not a cool martial art I say.
But the thing is you should practice.

The other thing is that fushin ryu karate is really good, because it is a new zealand karate style that a guy in japan went to here.

And he developed this great style.

I also just want to make sure that is it too late to begin with martial arts at my age again?
Should I drop it?

I want to got o wing chun and shaoling kung fu later.
But I believe karate or tae kwon do is a good way to start, then you can go to the others.
The nice thing of martial arts, is you can upgrate to another form.
After you have blackbelt.

Lol, kung fu is bs. I've done my own training, even if I didn't know it at the time.

As far as flexibility goes, i've just hopped around on a large trampoline since I was 4-5 years old and its been extremely beneficial to me. I've lifted weights since I was 13 and tried to figure out my own way to 'harmonize' my flexibility and strength, its turned out quite well. Maybe one more year and i'd probably be about as quick as a blackbelt, not as efficient, but quick.

I did hear about a guy who figured out how to counter all of the moves used in those fighting styles, apparently hes quick enough that no matter how fast your high kick is, hes already got his foot on yours and his hand on your ankle, pushing up. Instant nutbuster FTW.

I don't believe in karate. I've been in street fights and witnessed countless others...not once have I seen anyone successfully block a punch. Sometimes people are able to dodge out of the way in time, but that crap they teach you about blocking punches is never going to work in a real fight.

I recommend boxing lessons. You'll learn the dynamics of fighting plus lose the fear of being punched.

Karate is just an excuse to charge you high prices while giving you stupid colored belts. And by the way, I took a year of shotokan karate and got up to a blue belt. I'm talking from experience.

Unless you do Kyokushin, Karate is not worth your time.

That's because you've never seen someone face a master martial artist. Fight someone who is a master of Krav Maga and see if you're still alive after the fight. And if you've never seen someone block a punch, you must be around people with bad anatomical knowledge and horrible fighting skills.

Clearly, you're under the impression that martial arts is only about fighting. In which case, you'd be wrong. Discipline, understanding, and work ethic all play a role as well. Self defense plays a role in it, but that's not all it's about. But someone who masters their art will be above the little slap fights we call "street fighting".

I can understand why you never see anyone use martial arts in a fight. I know of a lot of people who were in my same class but resorted to regular fighting in a school/street fight. It takes time for your body to automatically react using the moves you've learned. I myself can testify to using some of the stuff I learned in a fight. Nothing complicated, but I roundhouse kicked a guy right in his side. He fell like a rock (people never expect the feet in a fight.)

Boxing just overthrows everything in my opinion.
Me and a couple of mates last night decided to have a scrap (No face hits).
The quick, sharp jabs in their arm and waist more or less had them attackless.

Infact i'm going to mess about on my punch bag now.
