Honesty and being blunt are the same thing. Harsh words are better than sugar coating everything.
As for cutting, you might want to seek psychological help for that. As for your mother, if you're not religious, I don't think praying is advice you'd appreciate, but talking to someone about it will always help. If you are religious, I advice praying, but realize that praying does not get you what you want.
